Bitcoin vs S&P 500 is a Versus Pair, a single CFD built by Versus Trade that sets Bitcoin against the broad US stock market. You take a side. Back Bitcoin to gain more, or back the S&P 500 to gain more. One instrument, one order, only at Versus Trade.

What is Bitcoin vs S&P 500?

Bitcoin vs S&P 500 is one tradable symbol carried on the Versus Trade platform as BTCvsUS500. You trade it as an instrument with its own price chart in MT5, like any other CFD. Bitcoin is the base asset, and the S&P 500, traded as US500, is the quote asset, so the pair follows the same base-and-quote logic as a forex symbol.

You buy when you back Bitcoin to outgrow the S&P 500 in percentage terms. You Sell when you back the S&P 500 to outgrow Bitcoin. Written elsewhere as BTC vs S&P500, it points to the same instrument. Searched as SP 500 vs Bitcoin, it is the same pair viewed from the Sell side. The order stays fixed. The opposite view is a Sell, not a renamed pair.

Why trade it instead of BTC/USD or US500 ?

Trading BTC/USD on its own is a bet on Bitcoin’s absolute move against the dollar. Trading the US500 on its own is a bet on the S&P 500’s absolute move against the dollar. This pair asks a different question: which of the two gains more in percent? Your position rides the gap between them rather than the direction of either asset against the dollar.

To express that same relative view without the pair, you would open two trades, long one asset and short the other, size both, and manage margin on each. Bitcoin vs S&P 500 expresses that idea through one order with one margin requirement. Versus Trade developed it in-house. No other broker carries it. Leverage and relative moves work in both directions, so the pair can move for you or against you as sharply as any CFD.

How the price moves

The pair’s pricing reflects relative percentage performance, not the size of the dollar move. The price is the base divided by the quote, so it represents Bitcoin’s dollar price divided by the S&P 500 index level, and it updates from real-time feeds of both assets.

Here is a hypothetical to make it concrete, not a forecast. Say Bitcoin rises by $100 and the S&P 500 rises by 100 points on the same day. If Bitcoin starts at $100,000 and the index starts at 5,000 points, an increase in either would represent a gain of 0.1% or 2%, respectively. The pair’s price would fall because the S&P 500 gained more in percentage terms even though both quoted values increased by 100.

Turn it around. If Bitcoin gains a larger percentage than the S&P 500, the pair price rises. When both move by a similar percentage, the pair stays roughly flat. Your profit or loss is worked out in the quote asset first, then shown in your account currency.

Versus Pair Calculation

A versus pair is calculated as the price of the first instrument divided by the price of the second instrument:

Pair Value = Instrument A Price ÷ Instrument B Price

Example:
Bitcoin = 100,000
S&P 500 = 6,500

Bitcoin/S&P 500 = 100,000 ÷ 6,500 = 15.38

If Bitcoin decreases by 5% and S&P 500 increases by 2%:

  • Bitcoin: 100,000 → 95,000
  • S&P 500: 6,500 → 6,630
  • New pair: 95,000 ÷ 6,630 = 14.33

Therefore, the pair decreases by approximately 6.82%, rather than exactly 7%, because the percentage changes are applied to each instrument’s price before calculating the new ratio.

Bitcoin vs S&P 500: the two sides

The pair puts two different assets in one symbol, which gives it a story to take sides on. Bitcoin, traded elsewhere as BTC/USD, is the newer and faster asset, prone to sharp percentage swings and often the first to run in a strong risk-on mood. The S&P 500, the basket of 500 large US companies quoted as SPX and traded on Versus Trade as US500, moves as the broad US market, wider and more diversified than a single crypto.

Buying the pair backs Bitcoin to deliver the better percentage return over your holding period. Selling backs the S&P 500 to lead. A trader who thinks a crypto upcycle will outrun US equities leans Buy. A trader who thinks the broad market will grind higher while Bitcoin cools leans Sell. Both directions carry risk. This is due to adverse changes in the price ratio. The percentage gap can widen or close against your position as easily as it can move your way.

When to trade the pair

These are setups, not predictions. Each one ends with a side and an action.

Risk-on and risk-off

Markets swing into a strong risk-on phase, and speculative assets tend to run hardest. If you expect Bitcoin’s percentage move to beat the S&P 500 in that phase, that is a Buy. If a risk-off wave looks likely to hit crypto harder than the broad index, that is a Sell. Open the pair on demo to test the idea, or go live with a stop-loss and take-profit set to your plan.

Policy or liquidity divergence

A shift in rate expectations or liquidity changes how fast each asset reacts. Think the S&P 500 will hold up better than Bitcoin through a tightening scare? Sell. Think looser liquidity will lift Bitcoin faster than equities? Buy. Size the position for the margin you are comfortable with, then manage it with SL and TP.

A longer view on which side leads

You are considering a multi-week position based on which asset you expect to outperform. If you are choosing between Bitcoin or the S&P 500 for that stretch, that view becomes a Buy or a Sell on this single pair, with no need to run two separate trades. Back Bitcoin with a Buy, or the broad market with a Sell. Start on the demo to watch how the pair behaves across sessions.

How Bitcoin and US500 move together and diverge

One thing worth watching is how closely the two assets move. Bitcoin and the S&P 500 sometimes trend together through risk-on and risk-off waves and sometimes pull apart when crypto runs on its own drivers. When they move in step, the pair’s price changes tend to be smaller because similar percentage moves partly offset each other. When they diverge, the pair can swing harder. A Bitcoin vs S&P 500 correlation chart shows a different relationship to that shown by the pair’s price chart. The instrument’s MT5 chart shows Bitcoin vs S&P 500 performance. This is shown as a price ratio over time.

Frequently asked questions

Should I buy Bitcoin or the S&P 500?

That is a decision only you can make. On this pair you do not have to own either one to act on it. If you back Bitcoin to gain more in percentage terms, you buy the pair. If you back the broad US market, you Sell. The decision and the risk are yours.

Can I back the S&P 500 over Bitcoin?

Yes. Selling the pair is how you back the S&P 500 to outgrow Bitcoin. A search for S&P 500 vs Bitcoin points to this same instrument seen from the Sell side.

Will I pay an overnight swap?

No overnight swap is charged. The entire Versus Pairs group is swap-free.

Can I try the pair without risking money first?

Yes. The pair is on the free Versus Trade demo with real-time pricing.

Does Bitcoin vs S&P 500 pay dividends?

The CFD does not pay shareholder dividends, but its index leg may generate dividend adjustments. The adjustment is credited or debited depending on your side.

How much can leverage change my risk?

Leverage on the pair is 1:100, with a 1% margin requirement. Leverage elevates both gains and losses. The percentage gap between Bitcoin and the S&P 500 can move against you. Set a stop-loss and trade a size you are comfortable with.
